She whipped around, scanning the woods, seeing nothing. “Don’t get spooked,” she coaxed to herself, weaving through the trees again. She remembered Dorian’s words and tried to comfort herself by thinking about them. “...Others may be masters of their own destinies, but they have no jurisdiction over mine.” She stepped from the stand of aspen and pine onto the seldom-traveled road which led higher up a steep canyon. Eerie strands of uneasiness clasped around her. Sabrina cast her eyes again down the road. From her vantage point she could see the cabin and the clearing. The reservoir was obstructed by brambles of chokecherry bushes as well as her view to the south. She was penned in on the north by a steep rocky ridge. Fear was bottling in her throat like a fizzing soda pop, ready to explode. Her heart hammered sideways. Sabrina didn’t know if the danger was real or imagined. “I’m certain I wasn’t followed,” she whispered to herself. She had two choices: she could run further up the hill or flee back toward the cabin. Her ears strained for noise. Nothing. She took a quick step backward, concealing herself again in a thick thatch of trees. Every sense in her body was on high alert. An icy wind gusted against her then. She noticed angry clouds roiling and boiling over the top of the mountain, covering the sun and casting the air with troubled, shadowy shades. Maybe that’s it-the danger. A storm is building. Thunder began belching over the ridge, rumbling and reverberating down the mouth of the canyon. Lightening was zigzagging from the turbulent rolling clouds. It was an alarming, violent sky. Snap, crunch, pop! Sabrina sucked in her ragged breathing as she strained against the wind to separate the sounds of the coming storm from something possibly more threatening. Dear God in Heaven! Please help me! Everything is wrong. I only came here to pray and find some peace, but there is no peace. Help me, help me, help me… A micro burst of wind suddenly ignited against the ridge line, forcing dirt, leaves and debris to swirl like raging banshees. Sabrina ducked her face toward an aspen tree to protect her eyes. Kaboom! Lightening hissed and thunder cracked simultaneously overhead. The ground quaked from the shock. Sabrina stumbled from her hiding place against the trees.
